Why Will A Professional Installer Not Use My Lights?

A homeowner in Ahwatukee or Chandler calls, mentions the three tubs of lights sitting in the garage, and asks whether we will put them up. It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer instead of a policy line.

We tried it the other way in our early seasons and the outcome repeated itself. A crew burns an hour untangling strands that short out in week two. The homeowner calls, frustrated for good reason, and now there is a debate about whether the failure came from the lights or the install. Nobody wins that conversation in December. So we made the same call that established holiday lighting companies across the country make. We supply the lights, we own the outcome, and there is nothing to argue about.

1. We Cannot Guarantee A Product We Did Not Buy

Every Holiday Lights Phoenix display carries a no bulb out guarantee. If a bulb dies or a run comes loose during the season, you call or text and we return within 24 to 48 hours to fix it at no charge. That promise works because we know what is on your roof. We buy the wire, cut it, test it before it leaves the shop, and store it in our own climate controlled facility between seasons. When a customer hands us a mixed pile of sets from three different years and two different stores, the condition of that wire is a mystery. Guaranteeing it would be a guess, and we do not make promises we cannot keep.

2. Retail Sets Are Built For 90 Days, Not For Arizona

Seasonal decorative lighting sold in the United States is generally certified to the UL 588 safety standard, which covers products installed for a temporary period of about 90 days or less at 120 volts. Manufacturers engineer retail sets to that expectation and no further.

Then consider where those sets live for the other nine months of the year. A Phoenix garage or attic can pass 140 degrees in July. PVC insulation turns brittle, adhesive labels curl off, and plastic sockets warp. A strand that worked fine last December has spent an entire Arizona summer cooking in a plastic tub. That is the product we would be asked to put 20 feet up on your fascia.

Wire gauge matters too. Professional stringer wire runs 18 gauge SPT-1 or SPT-2, built to carry a real load across a long roofline. Consumer mini light sets use much thinner wire and carry strict limits on how many strands you can join end to end. The moment somebody adds a fourth set to reach the far corner of the garage, the display runs outside what the manufacturer tested.

3. Store Bought Strands Will Not Wrap A Palm Tree

Palm wrapping is one of our most requested services in the Valley, and it is where customer owned lights fall apart fastest. A mature Mexican Fan Palm can take hundreds of feet of wire on the trunk alone. Doing that with pre-cut retail sets means a chain of connections, a visible seam every 25 feet, and a load the wire was never rated to carry. We run continuous custom cut lengths from bulk spool instead, which is the only way to get a clean wrap that holds through the season.

4. HOA Approval And Liability Sit On Us

Holiday lighting is real electrical work performed on a ladder. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has estimated 14,700 holiday decorating injuries treated in emergency rooms during November and December in a single season, an average near 240 a day, with falls accounting for the largest share. NFPA data reports an annual average of 853 home fires that began with decorations other than Christmas trees, and electrical or lighting equipment appears in a large share of holiday fire reports.

We carry full commercial liability insurance and our coverage is written around the work we control: our crew, our ladders, our methods, our materials. An unknown light set with an unknown history falls outside that. It also complicates HOA approval, since boards across Ahwatukee, Chandler, and Scottsdale expect a licensed and insured vendor using rated commercial product. Removing that variable protects your property, your board relationship, and our team.

5. Fixed Lengths Never Match A Real Roofline

Retail strands come in set lengths. Your house does not. That mismatch explains the dark gap over the front door and the bundle of extra lights dangling off the garage corner on so many do it yourself displays. We build every run from bulk stringer wire and cut to your exact measurements, so the line stops where your roof stops. 6. It Costs You More, Not Less

Most people ask about this to save money, which makes sense. In practice it runs the other way. Installing customer owned lights means testing every strand, diagnosing dead sections, driving to a store mid install for a replacement, and returning to troubleshoot failures we did not cause. All of it is billable labor. Our packages fold the lights, the design, the maintenance, the takedown, and the storage into one seasonal price, and we replace aging product at our cost.
